One of the primary goals of SHS is to encourage people who have experienced sexual harassment to
begin to communicate about what happened to them.
The popular opinion is that sexual harassment victims are insecure women and men who fly off the
handle, or immediately sue a company, right after someone says something off-color, and makes a
pass at them. Or they are presented as provocative and promiscuous, inviting sexual harassment with
their behavior or lifestyle. (Hence the popularity of the "nuts and sluts" defense.) They have even coined
the phrase "the sexual harassment industry" for a legal system that makes money off of these lawsuits.
Nothing could be farther from the truth. Rarely, if ever, does anyone focus on the psychological damage
that severe and chronic harassment can have, not to mention the permanent damage to careers and
lives. Few know about the often accompanying backlash and retaliation which often is worse than the
original harassment. Few know about the hostility that entire communities can heap upon a
complainant.

But people won't know how serious a problem this is if the
victims don't speak up about the truth and extent of what has
happened to them.
SHS began as a support forum, but after awhile it was clear that
this wasn't enough. So, we gradually added several other options
to enable us to hear from people who needed different formats to
express their perspective and connect with others--for example, a
more structured survey, or a way to share survivor art.
In October of 2006, we began to dub these features together as
SPEAK UP! which provides sexual harassment victims a place to
share their experiences and opinions with each other and the
public in a safe, respectful, non-judgemental environment. (Yes,
"Speak Up!" is a take on the line "Stand up!" from the movie North
Country--and we mean to honor message while expanding on it.)
